I congratulate you on the completion of twenty-three years of service at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC), Lahore. When I was initially told that building Pakistan’s first specialized cancer centre providing access to the poor was an impossible task, I knew that giving up was not an option. With your help, we defied all odds and SKMCH&RC in Lahore opened its doors to cancer patients in December 1994. Then I was told that running the Hospital would be impossible. I have never been one to be discouraged by challenges and I am grateful to all the supporters of this noble cause who believed with me in the need to win for the poor cancer patients in our country. Today, our Hospitals are not only symbols of hope but also an embodiment of the immense potential, generosity and goodness of our people.
In December 2017, SKMCH&RC in Peshawar successfully completed the second year of its operations and services at the Hospital continue to be scaled-up. I am pleased to tell you that, in conjunction with the commencement of chemotherapy facilities, inpatient beds, a fully equipped ICU, radiology and pathology facilities are also operational. Excavation is currently underway for construction of the radiation treatment facility which is expected to be functional by late-summer 2018.
A new Endoscopy Suite has been inaugurated at SKMCH&RC in Lahore. The new facility has not only enhanced our capacity to perform endoscopy procedures but it has also created space to allow expansion of the Emergency Assessment Room. Construction work on the new Clinical Tower, which will greatly augment all our existing clinical and support services, is expected to begin by the summer of 2018 and should be completed in two years.
In the year 2017, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust took a big step towards expanding its quality diagnostic services in Karachi by opening more than twenty-five new Laboratory Collection Centres. These centres will also help support construction of Pakistan’s third SKMCH&RC in Karachi. I am happy to be able to tell you that the architectural renderings for the new Hospital have been finalized and construction is expected to begin in the next few months.
With an estimated 150,000 new cancer cases diagnosed in Pakistan each year, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust is continuously striving towards enhancing Pakistan’s capacity to treat more cancer patients. For the year 2018, we need approximately AUD $128 million to sustain not only two state-of-the-art cancer centres but to also commence construction of the Hospital in Karachi and the Clinical Tower in Lahore and to continue to ensure that state-of-the-art technology is employed in providing cancer treatment at our facilities. As in past years, we expect about half of this to be met through your generous donations and Zakat. Let your donations help us keep the promise of hope by pledging any amount convenient for you and give a regular gift of hope in the year 2018.
With warmest personal regards,
